Barn On Avalon Road

Barn On Avalon Road, 6x6
SOLD

These farm structures stand about a quarter-mile outside Malvern, Ohio, heading south along Avalon Road, toward Lake Mohawk. The evening before I returned home, I drove all over the area to get as much photographic reference as I could. I was intrigued by this scene, in the way the buildings were nicely tucked into the road embankment and how their geometric shapes radiate out in different directions. The telephone pole approximates the vertical axis of the group.

Lovely Stephen, I love how you have captured that low light and the pink tones in the shadows. Róisín

I like everything about this painting. Lovely neutrals, strong composition, nice handling of the overhead wires. Just a hint of the blue sky...I'm partial to non-blue skies in paintings.

The very first thing I thought was "very Hopper-like". The building feels isolated and just that sliver of street adds to the isolation, I think that's why it reminded me of his work. Love the variety of neutrals, very well done!

Lovely, lovely, lovely, Stephen. This works on so many levels. Nice use of the neutrals while still giving a sense of color.

I love this painting. Wonderful composition, and love that off-center telephone pole.

I agree with these comments. This is a wonderful painting. It does have a Hopper like quality as do many of your paintings with architectural elements. I like your daring to tackle those potentially complex subjects, and even here with the telephone pole & wires as well. Not easily done, Stephen, but you make it look easy. Of course, that is what professionals do, make hard things appear to be done easily.

I grew up right there in that area. Lots of happy times playing where the lake is now. What a beautiful painting!
